World crude steel production - November 2005

World crude steel production for the 61 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute was estimated to be 94.1 million metric tons (mmt) in November. This is 4.1% higher than for the same month of 2004. World crude steel production has already exceeded 1 billion tons for the year. (2004 was the first year in which the world produced more than one billion tons of crude steel.)

Chinese production was 30.5 mmt in November, a rise of 17.4% compared to November 2004. Total crude steel production in China was 317.7 mmt for the first eleven months of 2005. This is a rise of 25.5% on the same period of 2004. Crude steel production in Japan was 9.1 mmt in November, 3.3% lower than for the same month of 2004. Total Japanese production for eleven months of 2005 is 103.4 mmt, 0.2% higher than for the same period of 2004.

France produced 1.6 mmt of crude steel in November, 4.5% lower than for November 2004. Production in Germany was 3.6 mmt for the month, 10.4% lower than the same month in 2004. Production in the United Kingdom was 1.1 mmt in November 2005, 0.1% higher than November 2004.

Preliminary crude steel production in the United States was 7.7 mmt in November, a decrease of 5.6% compared to November 2004. Production in Canada was 1.3 mmt, 5.2% lower than in November 2004.

Total world production for the first eleven months of 2005 is 1,011.6 mmt. This is an increase of 6.1% compared to the first eleven months of last year. Excluding China, world crude steel production is 694.0 mmt, 0.9% lower than for the same period of 2004.

South Africa produced 0.719 mmt of crude steel in November. This is 13.1% less than for the same month last year. Total year-to-date production in South Africa is 8.736 mmt, 0.5% up on the same period of 2004.

Overview of the primary steel industry in South Africa

Overview of the South African steel industry

South Africa was ranked the 20'th largest crude steel producing country in the world by the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) in 2004 and as net exporting country (exports-imports) of primary steel, South Africa was ranked 8th in the world during 2002. South Africa is also the largest steel producer in Africa, producing 57% of the total crude steel production of the continent during 2004. Total South African crude steel production amounted to 9,4 million tons in 2004.

Carbon, alloy and stainless steel deliveries by the industry amounted to 8,174 million tons in 2004. Of these 4,591 million tons were sold on the local market and 3,584 million tons were exported.

The range of primary steel products and semi-finished products manufactured in South Africa includes billets, blooms, slabs, forgings, light-, medium- and heavy sections and bars, reinforcing bar, railway track material, wire rod, seamless tubes, plates, hot- and cold-rolled coils and sheets, electrolytic galvanised coils and sheets, tinplate and pre-painted coils and sheets.

Apart from the estimated 2 million tons of ferrous-scrap sourced from the market, of which about 0,08 million tons were imported, by the local steel industry in 2004, about 0,39 million tons were exported by metal recyclers.

During 2004 a total of 39,3 million tons of iron ore were mined in South Africa, contributing about 3,3 per cent to world production from about 0,9 per cent of the world reserve base. During this period 24,7 million tons of iron ore were exported from South Africa accounting for approximately 3,9 percent of global trade.
