World crude steel production - November 2005

World crude steel production for the 61 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute was estimated to be 94.1 million metric tons (mmt) in November. This is 4.1% higher than for the same month of 2004. World crude steel production has already exceeded 1 billion tons for the year. (2004 was the first year in which the world produced more than one billion tons of crude steel.)

Chinese production was 30.5 mmt in November, a rise of 17.4% compared to November 2004. Total crude steel production in China was 317.7 mmt for the first eleven months of 2005. This is a rise of 25.5% on the same period of 2004. Crude steel production in Japan was 9.1 mmt in November, 3.3% lower than for the same month of 2004. Total Japanese production for eleven months of 2005 is 103.4 mmt, 0.2% higher than for the same period of 2004.

France produced 1.6 mmt of crude steel in November, 4.5% lower than for November 2004. Production in Germany was 3.6 mmt for the month, 10.4% lower than the same month in 2004. Production in the United Kingdom was 1.1 mmt in November 2005, 0.1% higher than November 2004.

Preliminary crude steel production in the United States was 7.7 mmt in November, a decrease of 5.6% compared to November 2004. Production in Canada was 1.3 mmt, 5.2% lower than in November 2004.

Total world production for the first eleven months of 2005 is 1,011.6 mmt. This is an increase of 6.1% compared to the first eleven months of last year. Excluding China, world crude steel production is 694.0 mmt, 0.9% lower than for the same period of 2004.

South Africa produced 0.719 mmt of crude steel in November. This is 13.1% less than for the same month last year. Total year-to-date production in South Africa is 8.736 mmt, 0.5% up on the same period of 2004.
