World crude steel production - November 2005

World crude steel production for the 61 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute was estimated to be 94.1 million metric tons (mmt) in November. This is 4.1% higher than for the same month of 2004. World crude steel production has already exceeded 1 billion tons for the year. (2004 was the first year in which the world produced more than one billion tons of crude steel.)

Chinese production was 30.5 mmt in November, a rise of 17.4% compared to November 2004. Total crude steel production in China was 317.7 mmt for the first eleven months of 2005. This is a rise of 25.5% on the same period of 2004. Crude steel production in Japan was 9.1 mmt in November, 3.3% lower than for the same month of 2004. Total Japanese production for eleven months of 2005 is 103.4 mmt, 0.2% higher than for the same period of 2004.

France produced 1.6 mmt of crude steel in November, 4.5% lower than for November 2004. Production in Germany was 3.6 mmt for the month, 10.4% lower than the same month in 2004. Production in the United Kingdom was 1.1 mmt in November 2005, 0.1% higher than November 2004.

Preliminary crude steel production in the United States was 7.7 mmt in November, a decrease of 5.6% compared to November 2004. Production in Canada was 1.3 mmt, 5.2% lower than in November 2004.

Total world production for the first eleven months of 2005 is 1,011.6 mmt. This is an increase of 6.1% compared to the first eleven months of last year. Excluding China, world crude steel production is 694.0 mmt, 0.9% lower than for the same period of 2004.

South Africa produced 0.719 mmt of crude steel in November. This is 13.1% less than for the same month last year. Total year-to-date production in South Africa is 8.736 mmt, 0.5% up on the same period of 2004.

Mittal Steel SA Ltd’s core businesses are flat and long steel products. The company has four major South African steel operations: Vanderbijlpark Steel and Saldanha Steel (flat steel products) and Newcastle Steel and Vereeniging Steel (long steel products).
 
In addition, the company operates a metallurgical by-products processing division, Mittal Steel SA Ltd Coke & Chemicals, formerly known as Suprachem.  The division processes Mittal Steel SA Ltd’s coke battery by-products and operates two coke batteries in Pretoria and Vanderbijlpark, which are no longer required for the steel making process.

Flat Steel Products
 
The company's flat steel operations, Vanderbijlpark Steel and Saldanha Steel, together produce 4,9 million tonnes of liquid steel per annum making it the largest supplier of these commodities in sub-Saharan Africa. Vanderbijlpark Steel, Mittal Steel SA Ltd’s largest operation south of Johannesburg, produces 3.1 million tonnes of liquid steel per annum, which constitutes 84% of South Africa’s flat steel requirements.
 
Extensive re-engineering and streamlining of this operation has anchored its position among the world’s most efficient producers. Vanderbijlpark is ranked among the world's lowest cash-cost producers of steel.
 
Vanderbijlpark produces a range of high-grade products, including:
  • Hot rolled steel sheet;
  • Hot rolled steel plate;
  • Hot rolled steel strip;
  • Cold rolled steel sheet;
  • Hot dip galvanized steel sheet;
  • Electrolytically galvanised steel sheet;
  • Colour coated steel sheet; and
  • Electrolytic steel plate.

Saldanha Steel is the world’s most technologically advanced and environmentally friendly steel mill, producing ultra thin hot rolled coil for stringent applications in select export markets in the Americas, Europe and Asia. The state-of-the-art plant produces 1.25 million tons of steel per annum.

 
The product specifications for the mills hot roll coil are:
  • Thickness: 1mm - 8,5mm
  • Width: 900mm - 1 560mm
  • Length: 300m - 2 300m
  • Max coil diameter: 2000mm
  • Max coil mass: 28 tons; and
  • KIM value of coil: 18kg/mm width.
 
Long Steel Products

Mittal Steel SA’s Newcastle Steel and Vereeniging Steel operations, are South Africa’s premier long steel producers, servicing 43% of the local market and maintaining a firm footing internationally. The Newcastle mill in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Province and the Vereeniging mill in the Gauteng Province, together account for total sales of 1.7 million tonnes yearly, half of which is exported. Of the 1.7 million tons of long steel produced per annum, 1,57 million tonnes is rolled profile products, 90 000 tonnes is seamless tube and 40 000 tonnes is forged products.
 
The Newcastle and Vereeniging steel mills profile products range includes:
