World crude steel production for the 62 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute was 103.6 million metric tons (mmt) in July. This is 14.8% higher than for the same month of 2005. Excluding China, world production rose 11.2% compared to July 2005.
China produced 36.1 mmt of crude steel in July, an increase of 22.2% year-on-year (y-o-y). Other major producers in the Asia region include Japan (9.9 mmt in July, up 4.5% y-o-y) and South Korea (4.0 mmt, +6.2%).
Germany was the largest producer of crude steel in the European Union with total production of 4.0 mmt in July. This is 14.5% higher than for the same month of 2005. July production in the United Kingdom was 1.2 mmt, an increase of 9.9% compared to July 2005.
Brazil produced 2.7 mmt of crude steel in July. This is 9.4% higher than for the same month in 2005.
South Africa produced 0.832 mmt of crude steel in July. This is 5.4% higher than for the same month in 2005.
In North America, Canada produced 1.3 mmt in July. This is an increase of 22.9% y-o-y.
Please note that many figures are estimates due to the summer holidays in the Northern Hemisphere.
