World crude steel production for the 62 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute was 103.8 million metric tons (mmt) in June. This is 12.7% higher than for the same month of 2005. Total world steel production stands at 595.7 mmt for the first half of 2006. This is 7.9% higher than for the same period of 2005.
China is still the largest steel-producing country with production of 36.6 mmt of crude steel in June. This is 18.5% higher than in June 2005. Total Chinese production for the first six months of 2006 is 199.5 mmt, 18.3% higher than for the first half of 2005. China accounts for 33.5% of world crude steel production in the first half of 2006. Japan produced 9.7 mmt of crude steel in June, 2.5% more than for the same month last year.
Total crude steel production in the European Union was 17.1 mmt in June, an increase of 12.4% compared to the June 2005. Major producers in the region include Germany 4.0 mmt (+8.9% compared to June 2005), Italy 2.7 mmt (+8.2%), and France 1.8 mmt (+11.4%). European Union production stands at 100.7 mmt for the first half of 2006, 4.0% higher than for the same period of 2005.
In the CIS region, production stands at 58.7 mmt for the first six months of 2006. This is 3.8% higher than for the same period of 2005. In June 2006, Russia produced 5.8 mmt of crude steel, 13.5% higher than for the same month in 2005. Ukraine produced 3.5 mmt, an increase of 23.0% compared to June 2005.
Brazil produced 2.4 mmt of crude steel in June. This is 4.4% lower than for the same month in 2005.
South Africa produced 0.840 mmt of crude steel in June. This is 10.3% higher than for the same month in 2005.
