World crude steel production for the 62 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute was 104.1 million metric tons (mmt) in May. This is 9.3% higher than for the same month of 2005. Total world steel production stands at 490.7 mmt for the first five months of 2006, 7.1% higher than for the same period of 2005.
China is again the largest steel-producing country with production of 35.9 mmt of crude steel in May. This is 19.6% higher than in May 2005. Japan produced 9.9 mmt of crude steel, 1.2% lower than for the same month last year. India produced 3.5 mmt of crude steel, 13.4 % higher than in May 2005.
Total crude steel production in the European Union was 17.5 mmt in May. This is 8.7% higher than in May 2005. Germany produced 4.0 mmt (+9.0% compared to May 2005), Italy 2.8 mmt (+7.8%), and France 1.8 mmt (+8.2%).
Brazil produced 2.5 mmt of crude steel in May. This is 9.0% lower than for the same month in 2005.
South Africa produced 0.828 mmt of crude steel in May. This is 2.0% lower than for the same month in 2005.
