World crude steel production for the 62 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute was 99.7 million metric tons (mmt) in March. This is 7.0% higher than for the same month of 2005.
China produced 32.9 mmt in March, 20.1% higher than for the same month in 2005. Japan produced 9.7 mmt of crude steel, up 0.8 % year-on-year. Total production in the Asia region was 51.7 mmt, 12.7% higher than in March 2005.
Switzerland has been added to the list of countries that report to IISI from this month. Turkey produced 1.9 mmt in March, up 10.8% on the same month last year.
In the EU-25 total production in March was 17.3 mmt, an increase of 4.0% over March 2005. France produced 1.8 mmt of crude steel, a rise of 8.7% year-on-year. The United Kingdom produced 1.2 mmt, an increase of 11.8%.
Brazil produced 2.5 mmt of crude steel in March. This is 10.2% lower than for the same month in 2005.
South Africa produced 0.704 mmt of crude steel in March 2006. This is 16,2% lower than for the same month last year.
