World crude steel production for the 61 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute was 89.0 million metric tons (mmt) in February. This is 4.9% higher than for the same month of 2005.
China produced 29.5 mmt in February. This is 17.0% higher than for the same month in 2005. Japan produced 8.9 mmt of crude steel, up 2.6 % year-on-year. Total production in the Asia region was 46.7 mmt, 12.1% higher than in February 2005.
Crude steel production in Turkey was 1.7 mmt in February, 7.1% higher than February 2005.
Italy produced 2.6 mmt of crude steel in February 2006, 3.4% higher than for the same month last year. Total production in France was 1.7 mmt, an increase of 2.5% year-on-year. Germany produced 3.7 mmt, a 0.6% increase compared to February 2005.
Brazil produced 2.1 mmt of crude steel in February. This is 17.7% lower than for the same month in 2005.
South Africa produced 0.721 mmt of crude steel in February 2006. This is 5,2% lower than for the same month last year.
